summer 1939 Bob joined civilian Civil Air Guard for flying lessons, but lessons stopped 3rd Sept when war broke out, just before he went solo
summer 1939 Bob, with Peterborough Cycling Club, met Rocky (engaged to Ted Palmer) at Wicksteed Park, Kettering
15 Dec 1939 Bob, drafted from Co-op Bakery, requested to join RAF, but was sent to the Infantry (Suffolk Regiment) at Bury St Edmunds. He gave his home address as 83 The Drive, Wellingborough at the time.
Aug 1940 Bob at SAS Hythe (Small Arms Course), a full Corporal in Suffolk Reg, but lost one stripe Nov 1940 for "misdemeanour"
17 Dec 1940 Bob volunteered to be a Glider Pilot in a second vain attempt to get into the RAF and fly, but his group was mistakenly delivered to 1 Special Service battalion (became No 1 Commando) at Stoke Fleming, near Dartmouth. When he found his brother Bill (who had joined the Royal Artillery on 1st Sept) was already there in same Company, he elected to stay even though having to lose the remaining stripe to do so
May41/Aug42 No. 1 Commando moved north to be based at Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland
1941 Rocky working as Secretary at Ultra Electrics, Wellingborough
July 1941 Bob: Rock Climbing Course, Glencoe - given one stripe back to be able to go. Became a Commando Rock Climbing Instructor
20 Dec 1941 Bob & Rocky married at All Saints Church, Wellingborough
Mar/Apr 1942 Bob on abortive 1 & 6 Commando raid on Bayonne, Lance Sergeant in rank
summer 1942 Bob at Beddgelert, North Wales on cliff climbing course
Aug 1942 Bob: Snow & Mountain Warfare course (Glenfeshie)
1942 Took part in Commando raid between Boulogne & Le Touquet
8 Nov 1942 Landed in Tunisia, North Africa with No 1 Commando, disguised as Americans. The troopship (Leedstown) with their kit was bombed next day - no clean clothes for 3 weeks
1 Dec 1942 Landed on the coast to cut the German supply road to Green Hill, in Tunisia, but ambushed by them, wandering for 3 days
1942/3 promoted from Corporal to Sergeant whilst in Africa
2 May 1943 Landed in Liverpool from North Africa
July 1943 Bob: Street Fighting course, Battersea
Aug-Sep 1943 Bob: pre-OCTU course
Sep 1943 OCTU course, including at the Isle of Man
15 Jan 1944 Bob commissioned from Sergeant to Lieutenant. When commissioned from the ranks, the army require a change of unit, so Bob moved from No. 1 to No 4 Commando. At the same time from Suffolk Regt. (Army Commandos always kept their underlying Regiment) to the Northamptonshire Regiment
Jan 1945 Left for Holland & Germany with No. 4 Commando, in Antwerp on leave on VE Day
May 1945 Returned to UK
26 July 1946 Bob left the Army (N'tonsh. Reg.), back to Co-op as a Pastry Cook then worked one year as Inspector at Perkins Diesel. Rocky also worked at Perkins Diesel at that time as Secretary to the Service Manager
1946 Bob & family moved to Wingcote, Whittlesey Rd, Stanground from 28 Huntly Grove, P'boro
11 Aug 1947 Bob joined Shaw and Sons
29 Mar 1948 Bob's father Herbert Shaw died
19 May 1948 son Peter Robin born
12 May 1949 Grace's daughter Julie (Pettit) born
2 Jul 1949 daughter Marti (Margaret) Christine born
27 Dec 1951 son John Malcolm born
Feb 1952 Bob & family moved to 144 Broadway
1954 Bob started teaching Mountaineering at Adult Institute
1954 Peterborough Mountaineering Club formed

2 April 2001 Bob died
