Bob volunteered to be a Glider Pilot in a second vain attempt to get into the RAF and fly, but his group was mistakenly delivered to 1 Special Service battalion (became No 1 Commando) at Stoke Fleming, near Dartmouth. When he found his brother Bill (who had joined the Royal Artillery on 1st Sept) was already there in same Company, he elected to stay even though having to lose the remaining stripe to do so |
